Thanks to volunteers holding down the fort in the gift shop, I was able to get away from work early today.
I headed north to a spot I discovered some time ago. I was thankful to have an air conditioned truck as the UP’s defect detector reported a temperature of 99°. Eventually, the Union Pacific’s MoPac heritage unit showed up, leading a lumber-heavy train destined for Des Moines southbound across western Hardin County. The clouds and the sun had been playing peekaboo the entire time I was there, and, sure enough, the sun ducked behind the clouds just before the train showed up. Still, it felt good to be out and about.
